DMK leader M.K. Stalin delivered a stern critique on December 24, 2016, stating that the continuous deployment of hundreds of armed police personnel at Poes Garden in Chennai, when no constitutional authority resided there, constituted a blatant abuse of state power. Following former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa's demise, the sprawling estate remained a private residence without any legally recognized executive post holder residing within its premises.
Stalin observed that deploying large contingents of state police, including special commandos, armed battalions, and senior supervisory officers, at public expense to guard private individuals violated established constitutional and administrative norms. While ordinary citizens confronted escalating traffic congestion, theft, and post-cyclone distress across Chennai, valuable police resources were squandered to maintain an illegitimate aura of power around an extra-constitutional power center.
The opposition leader demanded that the state administration immediately recall every police officer deployed at Poes Garden and assign them to public security duties across the state. Stalin declared that Tamil Nadu was governed by constitutional democracy, not feudal monarchy where state police acted as palace guards. He affirmed that the DMK would aggressively challenge such administrative misconduct before the public and judiciary.
