DMK leader M.K. Stalin launched a sharp attack against the state government on December 24, 2016, pointing out that ministers and high-level officials had virtually abandoned Cyclone Vardah relief operations due to acute panic over expanding Income Tax raids. Stalin noted that while cyclone-affected citizens in Chennai, Tiruvallur, and Kanchipuram were enduring immense hardship, the administrative leadership remained paralyzed by self-preservation fears.
Stalin emphasized that thousands of families lacked basic civic amenities, drinking water, and electricity weeks after the tempest destroyed residential infrastructure and uprooted extensive greenery. Instead of visiting damaged areas, coordinating municipal restoration, and distributing emergency financial assistance to victims, cabinet ministers were preoccupied with concealing corrupt assets and monitoring central investigative maneuvers. This gross dereliction of administrative duty left storm-battered residents to fend for themselves.
The opposition leader declared that putting personal evasion ahead of public disaster relief demonstrated utter governance failure and moral bankruptcy within the AIADMK administration. Stalin called upon the Chief Minister to enforce administrative accountability and mobilize state machinery on a war footing. He affirmed that the DMK would continue ground-level relief operations to support affected citizens across storm-hit districts.
