DMK leader M.K. Stalin issued a scathing condemnation on December 25, 2016, criticizing AIADMK politicians for systematically laundering illicit corrupt funds through District Central Cooperative Banks. Stalin characterized the illicit parking of unaccounted demonetized cash in rural cooperative institutions as an existential assault on the foundational principles and integrity of Tamil Nadu's historic cooperative movement.
Stalin observed that cooperative banks were founded to liberate poor farmers and rural weavers from usurious private moneylenders by providing accessible agricultural loans and credit support. By exploiting these grassroots democratic institutions to stash corrupt proceeds accumulated through illegal kickbacks, ruling party functionaries had betrayed the trust of honest rural depositors. This misconduct had invited federal restrictions that severely paralyzed routine agricultural lending across districts.
The opposition leader warned that turning peasant credit societies into havens for black money threatened to collapse the entire rural credit infrastructure. Stalin demanded that cooperative authorities audit transaction ledgers, freeze illicit accounts, and initiate criminal proceedings against political perpetrators. He reiterated that the DMK would fight resolutely to restore institutional sanctity and protect cooperative credit societies for struggling agriculturalists.
