DMK leader M.K. Stalin called upon Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam on December 25, 2016, to immediately institute a high-level official investigation into consecutive Income Tax searches conducted at District Central Cooperative Banks across Tamil Nadu. Stalin expressed grave concern over reports indicating that cooperative financial institutions were being utilized as conduits for converting unaccounted black money following currency demonetization.

Stalin pointed out that central cooperative banks were designed to serve as the vital economic lifeline for millions of small cultivators, rural artisans, and self-help groups. However, following the central demonetization decree, ordinary farmers were denied credit facilities and restricted from withdrawing their own lawful savings, while influential ruling party figures reportedly made massive illicit deposits in violation of banking norms. Such manipulation compromised the solvency of rural credit bodies.

The opposition leader insisted that the state administration cannot maintain an evasive posture while investigating agencies unearth grave irregularities in grassroots credit institutions. Stalin demanded that a high-level committee examine the transactions, identify beneficiaries of fraudulent deposits, and initiate strict legal prosecution against guilty management committees. He affirmed DMK's commitment to safeguarding cooperative banking for rural communities.
