DMK leader M.K. Stalin demanded on December 26, 2016, the immediate constitution of an independent commission of inquiry headed by a sitting or retired High Court judge to investigate the pervasive gutkha scam. Stalin insisted that state authorities and ruling party politicians who colluded with illegal contraband syndicates must be subjected to rigorous judicial investigation and held legally accountable without exception.
Stalin highlighted alarming investigative findings revealing that banned chewable tobacco products and narcotics were being manufactured and distributed across Tamil Nadu through systematic official complicity. Internal departmental documents had indicated that massive bribes were routinely paid to senior administrative officers, police commanders, and AIADMK ministers to ensure smooth transit and sale of banned substances. Such institutional rot compromised the rule of law and public health.
The opposition leader stated that routine departmental probes or internal police inquiries could never deliver justice when top administrative figures were implicated. Stalin emphasized that only an independent judicial inquiry possessed the necessary legal teeth and credibility to uncover the full conspiracy. He affirmed that the DMK would pursue the matter through legislative forums and judicial courts until every guilty official and politician was prosecuted.
