DMK leader M.K. Stalin demanded stringent and impartial legal punishment on December 26, 2016, for corrupt elements, syndicates, and officials responsible for inundating Tamil Nadu with illegal gutkha and contraband narcotic substances. Stalin condemned those who sought to amass illicit wealth by corruptly facilitating the manufacture, distribution, and sale of banned tobacco products, deliberately addicting the younger generation to life-threatening health hazards.
Stalin pointed out that despite statutory bans imposed by the government, prohibited chewable tobacco and narcotics were being openly sold near schools, colleges, and rural settlements. Investigative disclosures had revealed widespread complicity among high-ranking police officers, administrative bureaucrats, and influential ruling party politicians who received massive periodic kickbacks to protect the illicit trade. He stated that sacrificing youth welfare for corrupt wealth was an unpardonable societal crime.
The opposition leader stressed that the state government must act without fear or favor to dismantle this criminal network. Stalin demanded that all individuals involved, regardless of their political connections or official stature, be booked under stringent criminal provisions and brought to justice. He reaffirmed the DMK's commitment to eradicating substance abuse and protecting Tamil Nadu's youth from exploitation.
