DMK leader M.K. Stalin warned the Tamil Nadu government on December 27, 2016, that relentless street protests by farmers and mounting distress deaths across rural districts served as a stern warning signal to the ruling establishment. Stalin declared that rulers who ignored the cries of desperate cultivators and dismissed agricultural distress would inevitably face severe public condemnation and political reckoning from the people.
Stalin highlighted that daily reports of farmer suicides and shock-induced fatalities in Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, and Nagapattinam reflected deep agrarian collapse caused by erratic monsoons, dry rivers, and financial bankruptcy. Instead of rushing to comfort bereaved families and providing emergency compensation, ruling party leaders remained completely unconcerned, displaying shocking callousness toward rural misery. Such administrative insensitivity was pushing the state toward widespread unrest.
The opposition leader demanded that the state cabinet shed its complacency and convene an immediate emergency session to formulate an agricultural rescue package. Stalin stressed that farmers' blood and tears must not be disregarded for factional political games. He affirmed that the DMK would continue to champion farmers' rights and lead public struggles to protect Tamil Nadu's agricultural foundation.
