DMK leader M.K. Stalin urged the visiting central inter-ministerial assessment team on December 27, 2016, to adopt an inclusive, non-partisan approach while reviewing damages caused by Cyclone Vardah. Stalin stated that central officials inspecting devastated regions across Chennai, Kanchipuram, and Tiruvallur districts must engage directly with elected legislators, municipal representatives, and local stakeholders regardless of political affiliations.
Stalin pointed out that elected representatives residing in affected constituencies possessed detailed, ground-level insights into the destruction of local infrastructure, coastal settlements, agricultural farms, and small industrial units. Confining damage assessments exclusively to official state government briefings or curated routes risked overlooking the severe losses sustained by underprivileged communities. Broad-based consultations were essential for preparing an objective, realistic disaster assessment report.
The opposition leader stressed that natural calamities made no distinction between political loyalties, requiring collective solidarity and complete administrative transparency. Stalin called upon the central team to give patient hearings to representations from all political parties and civic organizations. He affirmed that the DMK was committed to ensuring that cyclone victims received fair compensation, comprehensive rehabilitation, and adequate central disaster funds without bureaucratic bottlenecks.
