DMK leader M.K. Stalin sharply criticized Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam on December 28, 2016, following the state government's refusal to increase the state advised price for sugarcane for the crushing season. Stalin declared that by failing to grant an equitable price revision for cane farmers, Panneerselvam had conclusively proven that his administration was an inert and dysfunctional government indifferent to rural hardship.
Stalin pointed out that sugarcane cultivators had submitted extensive representations demonstrating that production expenditures had exceeded statutory procurement rates. While agriculturalists in neighboring states received substantially higher state advised prices, Tamil Nadu cultivators were left to endure financial losses and bureaucratic apathy. This unresponsiveness highlighted the absence of political vision and administrative resolve in addressing agricultural distress.
The opposition leader asserted that a responsible government must act proactively to defend rural livelihoods rather than rubber-stamping the dictates of corporate sugar mills. Stalin emphasized that the AIADMK administration had utterly failed farmers across delta and non-delta regions alike. He affirmed that the DMK would actively champion the cause of sugarcane cultivators until the state implemented fair procurement prices and protected farming communities.
