DMK leader M.K. Stalin urged the Tamil Nadu government on December 28, 2016, to announce a fair and remunerative sugarcane procurement price of Rs 3,500 per tonne ahead of the Pongal festival. Stalin pointed out that cane farmers across the state were suffering severe economic losses due to sharp increases in diesel rates, fertilizer costs, and labor charges, while the statutory state advisory price remained entirely inadequate.
Stalin highlighted that public cooperative and private sugar mills owed extensive payment arrears running into hundreds of crores of rupees to cane growers. Despite repeated petitions and peaceful agitations by farming unions, the state government had made no effort to enforce statutory payment schedules or penalize defaulting sugar mill managements. Failure to disburse legitimate dues had pushed thousands of agricultural families into grave debt distress.
The opposition leader insisted that Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam convene an emergency review meeting to mandate immediate settlement of all pending dues with statutory interest. Stalin affirmed that safeguarding agricultural viability required fair pricing and timely cash disbursements before harvest festivities. He reiterated that the DMK would stand shoulder to shoulder with cane cultivators to ensure their demands were addressed.
