DMK leader M.K. Stalin issued a stern warning to the Tamil Nadu government on December 28, 2016, declaring that the party would mobilize sugarcane farmers across the state and launch massive joint agitations if their legitimate demands were not fulfilled immediately. Stalin expressed serious concern over the mounting financial distress suffered by cane cultivators who faced spiraling production expenses and stagnant statutory procurement prices.
Stalin highlighted that private and cooperative sugar mills across Tamil Nadu had failed to disburse hundreds of crores in overdue cane payments, plunging rural households into crushing debt traps. Cultivators were compelled to borrow from informal moneylenders at exorbitant interest rates while state authorities looked the other way. He warned that ignoring agricultural distress in the sugarcane belt would precipitate widespread economic collapse across rural communities.
The opposition leader demanded that the state administration mandate immediate clearance of all pending mill dues with accrued interest and announce a substantial hike in procurement prices before the Pongal festival. Stalin stated that the DMK would never stand by passively while agriculturalists suffered injustice. He affirmed that the party was preparing to lead statewide demonstrations to secure justice for sugarcane farmers.
