DMK leader M.K. Stalin commented on December 29, 2016, regarding the fifty-day milestone since the Union Government announced the sudden demonetization of high-value currency notes. Stalin noted that although Prime Minister Narendra Modi had promised the nation that demonetization would cause only short-term pain for long-term gain, the measure had instead turned into an unending nightmare of economic suffering for ordinary people.
Stalin pointed out that small manufacturing industries, weavers, agriculture markets, and informal trade sectors in industrial hubs like Tirupur, Coimbatore, and Salem were completely crippled by severe cash shortages. Millions of laborers were rendered jobless, while rural families struggled to purchase daily food supplies and medicines. The promised monetary normalization and return of banking normalcy remained distant, exposing the lack of basic administrative planning.
The opposition leader stressed that working-class citizens could not be made guinea pigs for reckless economic experiments that yielded no tangible benefits. Stalin affirmed that genuine economic progress required strengthening people's purchasing power, securing rural livelihood stability, and expanding employment opportunities. He called upon the Union Government to acknowledge the profound human distress caused by demonetization and initiate immediate restorative economic interventions.
