DMK leader M.K. Stalin declared on December 29, 2016, that the people of Tamil Nadu would never forgive or forget the ruling AIADMK government for its subservient silence regarding the catastrophic impacts of currency demonetization. Stalin pointed out that while chief ministers and political parties across other Indian states fiercely protested against the ill-conceived policy, the Tamil Nadu regime remained utterly docile and mute.
Stalin emphasized that the sudden invalidation of eighty-six percent of circulating currency notes had devastated daily wage earners, farmers, petty traders, and cooperative societies throughout the state. Ordinary citizens spent endless days standing in serpentine queues outside banks and automated teller machines, with dozens dying of exhaustion. Despite this widespread agony, the AIADMK government refused to adopt a resolution in the Assembly or register a formal protest with the Centre.
The opposition leader charged that the ruling party sacrificed state interests and public welfare out of sheer fear of central agencies and investigations. Stalin stated that true leadership demanded standing courageously with citizens during times of acute distress. He asserted that the DMK would continue to expose this betrayal and fight against anti-people economic measures.
