Editorial context

DMK leader M.K. Stalin demanded on December 30, 2016, that the state government institute a comprehensive judicial inquiry headed by a sitting or retired High Court judge to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa. Stalin stressed that full, transparent facts regarding her seventy-five-day hospitalization and medical treatment must be laid before the public without delay.

Stalin noted that contradictory statements from cabinet ministers, secrecy surrounding hospital bulletins, and persistent rumors had generated deep confusion and skepticism across Tamil Nadu. Even the Madras High Court had raised serious queries while entertaining petitions regarding the transparency of her medical care. He argued that the demise of an incumbent Chief Minister was a matter of paramount public importance requiring complete institutional clarity rather than continued evasion.

The opposition leader insisted that only an independent judicial commission possessed the requisite authority and credibility to summon witnesses, examine records, and determine historical truth. Stalin stated that public doubts could not be dispelled through ambiguous press releases or partisan narratives. He affirmed that the DMK demanded total truth and accountability to uphold democratic governance and institutional sanctity.
