DMK leader M.K. Stalin urged the Tamil Nadu government and municipal authorities on December 31, 2016, to take emergency measures to remove thousands of uprooted trees and debris left behind by Cyclone Vardah. Stalin pointed out that even weeks after the devastating storm hit Chennai, Tiruvallur, and Kanchipuram, massive piles of decaying timber and green waste remained dumped on roadsides, residential lanes, and open grounds.
Stalin warned that rotting plant matter combined with stagnation of sewage and rainwater was creating severe environmental degradation and breeding grounds for disease-carrying mosquitoes. Local residents were exposed to heightened risks of dengue, malaria, and waterborne infections amidst total municipal paralysis. He expressed deep concern that sluggish debris clearance was choking stormwater drains, obstructing vehicular traffic, and hindering routine civic life across affected neighborhoods.
The opposition leader demanded that the administration mobilize adequate heavy machinery, sanitary workers, and transport trucks on a war footing to clear the accumulated debris. Stalin urged health authorities to conduct intensive fogging operations and establish community medical camps. He affirmed that the DMK would continue monitoring recovery efforts to safeguard public health and ensure affected citizens received prompt civic relief.
