DMK leader M.K. Stalin formally wrote to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam on December 31, 2016, requesting an urgent official meeting to deliberate on the escalating agrarian crisis and farmer distress deaths. Stalin emphasized that with the monsoon failing completely, agricultural families across the state were confronting unprecedented survival challenges that necessitated bipartisan discussion and immediate governmental action.
Stalin underscored that scores of farmers had lost their lives in the Cauvery delta and southern districts due to shock and severe debt distress following total crop ruin. He stated that the scale of agrarian suffering demanded that the state leadership cast aside political differences and engage in direct, substantive consultations with opposition representatives and agricultural associations. A constructive dialogue was essential to formulate comprehensive relief measures.
The opposition leader urged the Chief Minister to allocate time without delay to discuss loan waivers, declaration of drought, central relief assistance, and fair compensation for bereaved families. Stalin affirmed that the DMK stood prepared to extend total constructive cooperation for any genuine initiative aimed at salvaging Tamil Nadu's farming sector. He reiterated that defending agricultural livelihoods remained the foremost priority of the state.
