DMK leader M.K. Stalin extended warm New Year greetings to the people of Tamil Nadu on January 1, 2017, appealing to party cadres and the wider public to adopt environmental conservation as their collective New Year pledge. Stalin urged citizens across towns and villages to plant and nurture tree saplings to replenish green cover and safeguard the state's natural ecological wealth for upcoming generations.
Stalin emphasized that environmental degradation, recurrent droughts, and climate fluctuations presented severe long-term dangers to public health, agriculture, and urban living conditions. Pointing to the massive loss of green canopy caused by recent severe cyclones in Chennai and coastal districts, he stated that systematic afforestation had become an urgent ecological necessity. Every tree planted represented an enduring investment in clean air, groundwater replenishment, and community wellbeing.
The opposition leader called upon youth wings, students, and civic groups to lead tree-planting drives in public spaces, educational institutions, and residential neighborhoods. Stalin affirmed that genuine progress required harmonizing economic development with environmental stewardship. He pledged that the DMK would continue to champion environmental protection, water body restoration, and sustainable conservation practices as integral facets of its social mission.
