DMK leader M.K. Stalin condemned the public statement issued by AIADMK leader M. Thambidurai on January 2, 2017, warning that it severely degraded the constitutional office of Chief Minister and risked provoking an administrative crisis. Thambidurai had publicly pressured the incumbent Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam to step down in favor of V.K. Sasikala, creating widespread uncertainty within the state executive machinery.
Stalin pointed out that Panneerselvam had been duly administered the oath of office by the Governor and held constitutional legitimacy to run the government. Having senior parliamentarians publicly undermine their own sworn Chief Minister openly insulted the state administration and degraded executive authority. He emphasized that such reckless political maneuvers reduced governance to a mockery while vital state concerns remained completely neglected.
The opposition leader stressed that Tamil Nadu was already reeling from cyclone destruction and severe agricultural distress, which demanded full administrative focus. Stalin stated that internal factional battles must not compromise constitutional propriety or the rule of law. He urged all political actors to respect constitutional norms, uphold the dignity of executive offices, and prioritize the welfare of citizens over partisan power grabs.
