DMK leader M.K. Stalin strongly criticized Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker M. Thambidurai on January 2, 2017, for blatantly misusing his constitutional office and official parliamentary letterhead for partisan political promotion. Thambidurai had issued an elaborate press statement on his official Lok Sabha letterhead, openly urging AIADMK interim general secretary V.K. Sasikala to immediately take over as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
Stalin characterized the act as disgraceful and completely inappropriate for a dignitary holding a high constitutional post in the Indian Parliament. He pointed out that the Deputy Speaker was expected to maintain institutional impartiality, decorum, and independence. Subordinating such an elevated constitutional position to promote intra-party factional loyalties and lobby for an unelected individual degraded the dignity of parliamentary institutions.
The opposition leader asserted that democratic norms were being systematically trampled by ruling party politicians desperate for personal favor. Stalin called upon constitutional authorities and the Speaker of the Lok Sabha to take note of this impropriety. He stressed that government stationery and high constitutional titles must never be exploited for partisan flattery and political sycophancy, demanding adherence to established parliamentary ethics.
