DMK leader M.K. Stalin led a massive demonstration at the historic arena of Alanganallur in Madurai district on January 3, 2017, demanding immediate government action to facilitate Jallikattu during the upcoming Pongal festival. Addressing thousands of farmers, bull rearers, youth, and party workers, Stalin insisted that both the central and state governments take urgent legislative steps to remove legal hurdles obstructing the event.
Stalin highlighted that Alanganallur stood as the epicenter of Tamil martial tradition and pastoral heritage, attracting international admiration for rural bull-taming skills. Depriving villagers of their centuries-old festival celebrations had generated deep anguish and anger across the region. He criticized the AIADMK administration for passive lip service, noting that timely intervention through a central ordinance was entirely feasible if the state showed political willpower.
The opposition leader assured the gathered crowds that the DMK would continue to spearhead demonstrations across Tamil Nadu until the sport was restored with full legal sanction. Stalin demanded that the Chief Minister take up the matter directly with the Prime Minister without further procrastination. He affirmed that defending Jallikattu was fundamental to honoring the collective dignity of the Tamil people.
