DMK leader M.K. Stalin announced on January 4, 2017, that he had formally accepted the historic role of Working President of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. At the party's General Council meeting held at Anna Arivalayam in Chennai, party General Secretary Professor K. Anbazhagan handed over the official copy of the unanimously adopted resolution entrusting Stalin with executive leadership responsibilities.

Stalin noted that the elevation came with the blessing and guidance of DMK President Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi, whose health had restricted active public appearances.
