DMK leader M.K. Stalin raised pointed questions on January 5, 2017, regarding the continued silence of the Tamil Nadu government amidst an unprecedented agrarian crisis. Stalin pointed out that the Karnataka government had officially declared its territory drought-hit months ago, promptly engaged the Union Government, and secured substantial central financial assistance to mitigate rural distress. Similarly, the neighboring Kerala government had acted decisively to declare state-wide drought.
Stalin contrasted these rapid administrative responses with the astonishing inertia prevailing in Tamil Nadu, where cultivators were enduring severe crop failure and water shortages. Despite widespread reporting of farmer distress deaths and agrarian unrest in the Cauvery delta, the state executive had failed to submit a formal memorandum to the Centre seeking national disaster funding.
The opposition leader demanded that Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam explain this negligence to the people of Tamil Nadu. Stalin questioned why the state administration was dragging its feet when agricultural families were drowning in debt and despair. He urged the government to declare Tamil Nadu a drought-hit state without further hesitation and mobilize emergency funds to save vulnerable rural livelihoods.
