DMK leader M.K. Stalin launched a sharp critique against the AIADMK administration on January 5, 2017, highlighting the stark contrast between Tamil Nadu's governance paralysis and the dynamic disaster responses of neighboring states. Stalin observed that while governments in adjacent Karnataka and Kerala were acting with demonic speed to protect farming communities from drought, the Tamil Nadu regime crawled at a snail's pace.
Stalin noted that acute failure of the northeast monsoon had triggered unprecedented water shortages and agricultural devastation across Tamil Nadu. Hundreds of thousands of farming households were staring at financial ruin as standing crops withered in the heat. However, instead of exhibiting proactive crisis management, state ministers remained mired in internal political intrigue and indifferent to mounting rural grievances across districts.
The opposition leader stressed that agriculturalists could not survive on empty administrative platitudes while fields turned to dust. Stalin called upon the state government to shed its lethargy, assess crop damages systematically, and immediately declare Tamil Nadu a disaster-affected drought zone. He affirmed that the DMK would continue to champion farmers' survival rights and demand urgent financial compensation for all distressed rural households.
