DMK leader M.K. Stalin demanded on January 8, 2017, that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam immediately publish comprehensive, verified figures detailing farmer suicides and shock-induced deaths across the state. Stalin pointed out that as drought worsened throughout agricultural districts, rural families were mourning cultivators who suffered fatal cardiac arrests or took their own lives after devastating crop failure.

Stalin criticized the state administration for attempting to downplay the crisis by attributing agricultural fatalities to natural causes or personal ailments. He asserted that such official denial dishonored deceased farmers and deprived bereaved families of lawful state compensation. Independent grassroots accounts and farmer organizations were documenting scores of deaths in the Cauvery delta alone, creating deep public alarm and intense rural grievance.

The opposition leader insisted that complete administrative transparency was the essential first step toward genuine relief. Stalin urged the Chief Minister to direct district collectors to record every farmer fatality objectively and ensure immediate financial assistance reached affected families. He affirmed that the DMK would continue to hold the government accountable until every agrarian death was acknowledged and justly compensated with state relief funds.
