DMK leader M.K. Stalin issued an urgent appeal to the Tamil Nadu government on January 11, 2017, demanding swift executive intervention to halt a tragic surge in farmer suicides. Highlighting acute distress unfolding across rural districts due to monsoon failure and water scarcity, Stalin stressed that every single day lost to administrative inertia directly increased the tragic death toll among struggling cultivators.
Stalin emphasized that farmers in the Cauvery delta and southern districts faced total harvest loss and mounting debts from institutional lenders. With fields parched and rural households pushed into destitution, cultivators were taking desperate steps out of sheer helplessness. Stalin warned that the state administration could not remain a silent spectator while food producers ended their lives in agony across rural belts.
The opposition leader called upon the Chief Minister to deploy emergency relief teams, announce prompt financial assistance, and initiate structured outreach programs to instill confidence among vulnerable farming families. Stalin affirmed that defending farmers was the foremost moral obligation of the state government. He urged authorities to discard bureaucratic delays and treat agrarian distress as an emergency requiring immediate, compassionate, and decisive action.
