DMK working president M.K. Stalin criticized Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam on January 11, 2017, for making statements contrary to truth regarding the Jallikattu crisis. Stalin remarked that despite having full knowledge of the legislative background, court rulings, and executive remedies available to the state, the Chief Minister chose to mislead the public, questioning what hidden political pressures compelled him to distort facts.
Stalin pointed out that Panneerselvam was well aware that an emergency state ordinance or special Assembly enactment could provide immediate legal cover to conduct the traditional sport during Pongal. Instead of exercising executive authority, the Chief Minister offered evasive explanations and shifted responsibility onto opposition parties and court proceedings. Stalin noted that such evasiveness revealed an administration paralyzed by undisclosed external pressures from New Delhi.
The opposition leader demanded transparency from the head of the government, urging Panneerselvam to disclose what was preventing him from enacting state-level protections. Stalin affirmed that the people of Tamil Nadu deserved honest leadership during a cultural crisis. He called upon the Chief Minister to abandon misleading rhetoric, confront political pressures boldly, and take immediate steps to restore Jallikattu.
