DMK working president M.K. Stalin set the historical record straight on January 11, 2017, regarding the legal trajectory of Jallikattu in Tamil Nadu. Stalin reminded the public that under the previous DMK government led by Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi, legal challenges and court obstacles were methodically surmounted by enacting the Tamil Nadu Regulation of Jallikattu Act in 2009, which enabled the traditional sport to be conducted safely and systematically with full administrative oversight.
Stalin pointed out that the devastating total ban on Jallikattu occurred entirely during the tenure of the AIADMK regime. Because of administrative lethargy, poor legal presentation before the Supreme Court, and political subservience to the central government, the state lost vital legal protections. The ruling AIADMK failed to introduce necessary amending legislation or effectively advocate for the rural sport's cultural significance.
The opposition leader accused the AIADMK of spreading misleading narratives to cover up its institutional failures. Stalin affirmed that the DMK possessed a proven track record of protecting Tamil cultural heritage through sound legislative mechanisms. He challenged the ruling dispensation to take responsibility for its blunders and act decisively to lift the ban.
