DMK working president M.K. Stalin raised serious questions on January 11, 2017, regarding a violent police lathi charge on young demonstrators seeking the conduct of Jallikattu. Stalin questioned whether the Tamil Nadu police force was acting on the hidden instigation of foreign non-governmental organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) when assaulting unarmed youth who gathered peacefully to demand their cultural rights.

Stalin condemned the police action as utterly unwarranted and deeply offensive to Tamil sentiment. He observed that while animal rights groups enjoyed lavish patronage and litigation support to attack rural traditions, local youth who sought to preserve native bulls were treated as criminals by their own state government. Deploying force against peaceful demonstrators exposed the administration's distorted priorities and subservience to external lobbies.

The opposition leader demanded that Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam explain who authorized the lathi charge against cultural enthusiasts. Stalin warned that the state government could not suppress public passion through police batons while bowing to foreign-funded organizations. He demanded an immediate inquiry into the incident, the withdrawal of all charges, and the restoration of Jallikattu.
