Editorial context

DMK working president M.K. Stalin led a massive demonstration in Chennai on January 13, 2017, as part of statewide protests organized by the DMK demanding an emergency ordinance to permit the conduct of Jallikattu. Addressing thousands of party cadres and supporters, Stalin urged both the Union and state governments to immediately promulgate an executive ordinance to dismantle legal impediments ahead of the Pongal festival.

Stalin pointed out that simultaneous agitations were underway across all district headquarters in Tamil Nadu, reflecting the collective determination of the Dravidian movement to defend native cultural traditions. He criticized both the central BJP government and the state AIADMK administration for repeatedly offering hollow verbal assurances while failing to take necessary constitutional steps under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

The opposition leader emphasized that Jallikattu was deeply woven into Tamil agrarian culture and was vital for the preservation of indigenous bull breeds. Stalin warned that the DMK would not remain silent while external forces dismantled centuries-old rural traditions. He affirmed that the party's statewide agitation would continue until the traditional sport was rightfully restored to the rural heartlands.

This is an initiative of unofficial DMK and Dravidian Ideology supporter, a fan of Thanthai Periyar, Perarignar Anna and Kalaignar — not affiliated with any official DMK party or persons.
