DMK working president M.K. Stalin condemned as inhumane and brutal the police lathi charge carried out on January 14, 2017, against Tamil cultural activists, film industry personalities, and members of the public demonstrating peacefully in support of Jallikattu. Stalin stated that unleashing violent baton charges on citizens exercising their constitutional right to peaceful assembly demonstrated the autocratic mindset of the AIADMK administration.

Stalin observed that citizens from diverse walks of life, including renowned film artists, scholars, and college students, had joined public demonstrations across Chennai and Madurai to register their cultural solidarity. These peaceful gatherings presented no threat to law and order. Instead of handling demonstrators with understanding and restraint, police personnel resorted to unprovoked violence, leaving several peaceful participants injured.

The opposition leader asserted that suppressing cultural expression through police batons would only intensify popular resentment across Tamil Nadu. Stalin warned the state government that trying to crush a cultural movement through force was an exercise in futility. He demanded an immediate halt to police excesses, demanding that Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam ensure accountability and safeguard the constitutional right to dissent.
