DMK working president M.K. Stalin severely censured the AIADMK administration on January 15, 2017, for failing to hold the traditional bull-taming sport of Jallikattu for the third consecutive year. Stalin condemned the state government for its total incompetence and betrayal of public sentiment, noting that rather than securing necessary legal clearances, the police machinery was being deployed to assault and arrest peaceful youth across Madurai and other districts.
Stalin pointed out that Pongal was the premier cultural festival of Tamils, symbolizing agrarian prosperity and bovine reverence. Yet, for three straight years under AIADMK rule, arenas in Alanganallur, Palamedu, and Avaniyapuram remained desolate. When courageous youth and villagers gathered peacefully to assert their cultural heritage, state authorities responded with batons, midnight detentions, and criminal intimidation.
The opposition leader stated that trampling on youth enthusiasm and rural pride demonstrated the government's callous detachment from cultural heritage. Stalin affirmed that the DMK stood completely behind the agitating villagers and student activists. He demanded the immediate release of all detained protesters and the dropping of charges, warning that the public would never forgive this historic betrayal of Tamil pride.
