DMK working president M.K. Stalin launched a stinging attack on the ruling AIADMK government on January 15, 2017, accusing state ministers of bartering away Tamil cultural rights for their own political survival. Stalin charged that the state administration deliberately surrendered the conduct of Jallikattu to appease the central government in exchange for shielding corrupt cabinet members from ongoing federal investigative agency scrutiny.
Stalin asserted that the state government possessed multiple legal avenues to enable Jallikattu, including promulgating an emergency state ordinance or convening a special legislative session. Instead of acting boldly to defend Tamil identity during the Pongal festival, Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam and his colleagues adopted a submissive posture toward New Delhi. This political cowardice, Stalin noted, directly harmed farmers, rural youth, and indigenous cattle preservation.
The opposition leader declared that Tamil Nadu's citizens saw through the ruling dispensation's self-serving compromises. Stalin stated that an administration that prioritized individual immunity from graft cases over defending fundamental cultural traditions had forfeited its moral right to govern. He reaffirmed that DMK would continue to mobilize public resistance against such unprincipled surrender of state interests.
