DMK working president M.K. Stalin demanded on January 16, 2017, that the Union government dissolve the existing Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) and reconstitute it to include adequate representation from Tamil Nadu. Stalin stated that the board had become dominated by urban elitist viewpoints and corporate-backed non-governmental organizations completely disconnected from rural livelihoods, pastoral practices, and regional agrarian realities across southern states.
Stalin pointed out that the AWBI had consistently taken hostile, adversarial stances in courts against traditional Tamil cultural practices like Jallikattu. By misrepresenting cultural heritage as animal abuse, the board failed to appreciate how native livestock breeds had been lovingly preserved and nurtured through centuries of indigenous pastoral wisdom. The absence of authentic grassroots agrarian representatives from Tamil Nadu made the body inherently biased.
The opposition leader insisted that any statutory regulatory body dealing with animal welfare must respect regional traditions and cultural pluralism. Stalin urged the central government to dissolve the compromised panel, purge members aligned with foreign NGOs, and appoint genuine veterinary experts, farmers, and cultural scholars from Tamil Nadu to ensure balanced and culturally sensitive policy formulation.
