DMK working president M.K. Stalin demanded on January 16, 2017, that the Union government impose an immediate ban on the foreign non-governmental organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). Stalin accused the organization of functioning with an anti-national agenda aimed at destroying Tamil cultural heritage, alienating rural communities from their indigenous livestock traditions, and paving the way for corporate dominance over domestic bovine breeds.
Stalin asserted that PETA operated with complete ignorance of the symbiotic relationship between rural Tamil farmers and native cattle varieties like Kangayam, Pulikulam, and Umblachery. By misrepresenting traditional bull-taming sports as animal cruelty through selective, distorted litigation, the foreign-funded organization had succeeded in imposing legal bans that directly threatened the survival of native livestock breeds and rural agrarian ecosystems.
The opposition leader emphasized that Tamil culture revered bulls as family members and vital agrarian partners rather than commodities. Stalin called upon the central government to investigate PETA's funding sources, terminate its operations in India, and protect native sports from foreign ideological imposition. He reiterated that the DMK stood committed to safeguarding indigenous pastoral traditions and cultural autonomy.
