DMK working president M.K. Stalin visited the headquarters of the Director General of Police in Chennai on January 17, 2017, to submit a formal memorandum. Stalin demanded the immediate and unconditional release of all village youth, students, and cultural activists who were arrested by police forces during peaceful demonstrations in the historic Jallikattu epicenter of Alanganallur in Madurai district.
Stalin pointed out that hundreds of villagers and young protesters had staged a peaceful overnight vigil in Alanganallur, exercising their democratic right to express dissent against the judicial prohibition on Jallikattu. The early-morning police assault, forceful detention of over two hundred individuals, and registration of criminal complaints were heavy-handed actions that deeply offended public sentiment across Tamil Nadu.
The opposition leader urged top police leadership to recognize that the demonstrators were not anti-social elements, but ordinary citizens defending their cultural heritage and rural cattle traditions. Stalin insisted that law enforcement agencies withdraw all First Information Reports filed against the detained youths and ensure their safe return home. He reaffirmed that the DMK would continue to champion democratic civil liberties against arbitrary state action.
