Editorial context

DMK working president M.K. Stalin visited Marina Beach in Chennai on January 17, 2017, to extend his direct solidarity to thousands of students and youth gathered in protest. Stalin joined the demonstration to demand the immediate, unconditional release of dozens of peaceful youth who had been detained by police forces in Alanganallur and other locations for staging sit-ins supporting the traditional sport of Jallikattu.

Stalin interacted with the gathered youth and student representatives, listening to their demands and expressing deep appreciation for their non-violent, disciplined mobilization. He severely condemned the state police for resorting to preventive arrests and night raids against young citizens whose only motive was defending Tamil culture. Stalin asserted that protesting peacefully for cultural rights was a constitutional freedom guaranteed to all citizens, not a criminal act.

The opposition leader declared that the DMK stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the agitating students and would provide complete legal assistance to ensure that all detained youth were released without charges. Stalin warned the state government that arrests and intimidation would only escalate public anger, demanding that all cases registered against peaceful protesters be dropped immediately.
