DMK working president M.K. Stalin urged Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam on the night of January 17, 2017, to directly visit Marina Beach to engage in constructive dialogue with thousands of protesting youth. Stalin stressed that the peaceful, determined assembly of students and citizens defending Jallikattu demanded direct political attention and immediate administrative resolution from the highest executive authority of the state government.
Stalin noted that tens of thousands of young men and women had braved cold coastal winds and spent nights under open skies without any political sponsorship or partisan banners. Their spontaneous mobilization was entirely driven by cultural pride, love for indigenous cattle, and indignation over judicial prohibitions. Ignoring their presence or delegating negotiations to minor officials showed an utter lack of leadership and empathy from the elected government.
The opposition leader emphasized that the Chief Minister was obligated to personally assure the assembled youth of concrete government steps to revive the sport. Stalin called upon Panneerselvam to listen directly to their grievances, outline legal strategies, and work collaboratively toward a swift resolution. He maintained that responsive leadership was crucial to honoring peaceful democratic protests.
