DMK working president M.K. Stalin issued a grave warning on January 18, 2017, regarding the disastrous consequences of check dams being constructed across the Bhavani river by Kerala. Stalin highlighted that Tamil Nadu was already suffering from historic drought conditions, with Cauvery riverbeds running dry and distressed cultivators committing suicide across delta districts due to severe crop failures and mounting institutional debts.
Stalin asserted that if Kerala were allowed to obstruct the natural flow of the Bhavani river, the entire western agricultural belt known as the Kongu region would face irreparable ecological and economic ruin. Farmers in Erode, Tiruppur, and Karur depended entirely on the Bhavanisagar dam for seasonal irrigation, while urban and rural local bodies relied on the river system for drinking water supply. Choking these flows would trigger widespread displacement and crisis.
The opposition leader condemned the state government for its passive demeanor while neighbouring states systematically encroached upon Tamil Nadu's riparian entitlements. Stalin demanded that the administration seek an immediate interim injunction from the Supreme Court while mobilizing political pressure to halt ongoing construction work. He reaffirmed DMK's steadfast commitment to protecting farmers' water security.
