DMK working president M.K. Stalin called upon Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam on January 18, 2017, to personally travel to Thiruvananthapuram to meet Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. Stalin urged the Chief Minister to forcefully demand that the Kerala government immediately halt its unilateral construction of six check dams across the Siruvani and Bhavani rivers, which threatened riparian water rights across western Tamil Nadu.
Stalin pointed out that constructing unauthorized barrages in the upstream catchment areas of the Bhavani basin violated interstate river agreements and tribunal awards. Such obstruction would severely choke inflows into the Bhavanisagar reservoir, precipitating catastrophic drinking water shortages and devastating hundreds of thousands of acres of fertile agricultural land across Coimbatore, Tiruppur, and Erode districts.
The opposition leader criticized the state administration for issuing routine correspondence instead of engaging in urgent, high-level political diplomacy. Stalin asserted that Chief Minister Panneerselvam must hold direct bilateral talks with his Kerala counterpart to safeguard Tamil Nadu's legitimate water rights. He warned that complacency would permanently damage the Kongu region's agrarian economy, calling for immediate legal and political intervention.
