DMK working president M.K. Stalin extended his best wishes on January 18, 2017, to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam ahead of his visit to New Delhi to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Stalin expressed hope that the Chief Minister's mission would prove successful in securing an immediate presidential ordinance to lift the judicial ban on Jallikattu, fulfilling the passionate aspirations of millions of protesting citizens across the state.
Stalin stressed that the entire state stood united behind the demand to safeguard Tamil cultural identity and rural sport traditions. He noted that the unprecedented, peaceful demonstrations led by students and youth on Chennai's Marina Beach and in various district centers had placed an urgent moral obligation on the state's leadership to return from the national capital with concrete, positive results.
The opposition leader urged Panneerselvam to present the state's case forcefully, without making political compromises or accepting vague assurances. Stalin emphasized that the Chief Minister must impress upon the Union leadership that nothing short of immediate executive and statutory clearance would pacify the righteous indignation of the public. He reiterated DMK's total support for any genuine effort to restore Jallikattu.
