DMK working president M.K. Stalin advised Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam on January 18, 2017, to respect the deep sentiments of the protesting student community by broadening his engagement with the Union government. Stalin proposed that rather than traveling alone to New Delhi, the Chief Minister should lead a comprehensive, bipartisan delegation comprising leaders of all political parties and representative student organizers to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Stalin argued that presenting a unified delegation would reflect the collective, non-partisan resolve of seven crore Tamils, providing irresistible moral and political weight to the demand for an immediate presidential ordinance on Jallikattu. Incorporating young student representatives who had catalyzed the statewide agitation would ensure that the authentic voice of the youth was heard directly by the country's highest executive authority.
The opposition leader emphasized that defending Tamil cultural heritage transcended narrow electoral politics and party rivalries. Stalin stated that the DMK was fully prepared to join such a joint mission to New Delhi in the larger interest of the state. He urged the Chief Minister to abandon unilateralism and embrace a united front to secure immediate central concurrence.
