DMK working president M.K. Stalin called upon Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam on the morning of January 23, 2017, to immediately visit Marina Beach and interact directly with protesting students and youth. Stalin urged the Chief Minister to personally reassure the agitators that the newly promulgated ordinance and forthcoming legislative enactment would permanently protect the conduct of Jallikattu without any future judicial or administrative impediments.
Stalin pointed out that young demonstrators who had assembled selflessly for days possessed legitimate concerns regarding the legal durability of an emergency ordinance. Rather than dispatching armed police contingents to intimidate and forcibly evict students, the head of the elected government was duty-bound to engage in open dialogue, clarify legal safeguards, and satisfy their doubts in person.
The opposition leader emphasized that democratic leadership required patience, humility, and willingness to listen to public concerns. Stalin warned that attempting to resolve a peaceful cultural resurgence through police ultimatums was fundamentally mistaken. He urged Panneerselvam to abandon confrontation, arrive at the protest venue, address the students respectfully, and facilitate an amicable, dignified conclusion to the unprecedented public mobilization.
