Editorial context

DMK working president M.K. Stalin submitted a formal representation to acting Governor Ch. Vidyasagar Rao on January 23, 2017, demanding a comprehensive judicial investigation into the violent police action across Chennai and other districts. Stalin requested the constitution of a Commission of Inquiry headed by a sitting judge of the Madras High Court to ensure an impartial probe into the circumstances leading to the severe lathi charge and tear gas shelling against peaceful Jallikattu protesters.

Stalin pointed out that internal police inquiries or executive magisterial investigations would lack credibility given the direct involvement of senior police officials in the crackdown. Over seven days, students and citizens had maintained extraordinary discipline. The abrupt dawn operation, unprovoked assault on sleeping demonstrators, and harassment of coastal residents demanded a credible judicial review to uncover who ordered the operation.

The opposition leader stressed that constitutional accountability could only be safeguarded through an independent judicial mechanism equipped to examine evidence, subpoena records, and question top bureaucrats. Stalin urged the Governor to act expeditiously to restore public faith in democratic governance. He affirmed that DMK would persistently advocate for justice for all affected citizens.
