DMK working president M.K. Stalin urged Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam on January 25, 2017, to present comprehensive, unvarnished documentation regarding crop failure, drinking water scarcity, and agrarian distress to the visiting central drought assessment team. Stalin insisted that the state administration must accurately reflect ground realities to secure immediate and sufficient financial assistance from the Union government.
Stalin pointed out that Tamil Nadu was experiencing an unprecedented drought crisis following the catastrophic failure of both southwest and northeast monsoons. Over a hundred farmers had reportedly succumbed to cardiac arrest or committed suicide under crushing debt burdens, while dry riverbeds left countless rural and urban settlements without potable water. In such dire circumstances, bureaucratic underreporting or administrative lethargy would prove catastrophic for farming households.
The opposition leader demanded that the Chief Minister personally lead discussions with the central delegatory team to substantiate the state's financial claim without dilution. Stalin called for immediate disbursement of interim compensation to affected cultivators and agricultural laborers. He affirmed that the DMK would continue pressing both state and central governments to provide holistic drought relief and debt relief.
