DMK working president M.K. Stalin escalated his campaign for accountability on January 25, 2017, by dispatching detailed memorandums along with comprehensive video documentation to the President of India, the Governor of Tamil Nadu, the National Human Rights Commission, and the State Human Rights Commission. Stalin demanded immediate, independent inquiries into severe police brutalities perpetrated against peaceful student protesters and local fishing communities during the forcible eviction on Marina Beach.
Stalin asserted that video footage circulating in the public domain clearly captured police personnel setting vehicles on fire, vandalizing civilian property in nearby settlements, and using disproportionate force against unarmed citizens. Rather than ensuring a peaceful dispersal after the special Assembly session enacted the Jallikattu legislation, law enforcement had unleashed unwarranted violence that shocked civil society.
The opposition leader stressed that constitutional bodies must hold responsible police officers and their political directors accountable for egregious human rights violations. Stalin urged human rights panels to institute direct judicial inquiries to uncover who authorized the crackdown. He pledged that the DMK would pursue every available legal avenue until victims received justice and law enforcement agencies adhered to constitutional conduct.
