DMK working president M.K. Stalin delivered a commemorative address in Coimbatore on January 25, 2017, paying homage to the heroic student community of Tamil Nadu. Speaking on Language Martyrs' Day, Stalin drew a direct historical parallel between the courageous students who led the historic 1965 anti-Hindi imposition agitations and the contemporary youth who successfully led the mass movement to revive Jallikattu across the state.
Stalin commended the students and youth for their resolute defense of Tamil identity, language, and indigenous sporting traditions. He noted that whenever Tamil rights, dignity, or cultural legacy faced existential threats from authoritarian policies or external interference, students had unfailingly risen to lead non-violent, determined resistance. Their peaceful mobilization at Marina Beach and across regional centers showcased remarkable organizational discipline, democratic maturity, and cultural conviction.
The opposition leader stressed that the DMK had consistently derived its strength from student idealism and self-respect values. Stalin urged youth to remain vigilant, socially conscious, and actively engaged in defending democratic freedoms and state autonomy. He affirmed that the DMK would continue to stand steadfastly beside student activists in their struggles for social justice.
