DMK working president M.K. Stalin issued a directive to party members and office-bearers across Tamil Nadu on January 29, 2017, urging them to abandon the culture of lavish hoardings and flex banners. Stalin asked cadres to refrain entirely from erecting expensive, ostentatious display boards for party events and meetings. Instead, he called upon them to honor party heritage by proudly hoisting the traditional black-and-red flag envisioned by DMK founder C.N. Annadurai.
Stalin emphasized that genuine political devotion was rooted in ideological commitment, grassroots public service, and disciplined conduct rather than hollow, wasteful visual spectacles. Unregulated banners had increasingly become a public nuisance, endangering pedestrian safety, disrupting vehicular traffic, and spoiling urban aesthetics across towns and cities. By shifting focus back to the party's foundational colors, cadres could symbolize simplicity and ideological conviction.
The opposition leader reiterated that the DMK must lead by example in civic responsibility and public order. Stalin appealed to district secretaries and youth wing volunteers to respect this directive strictly during his upcoming tours. He stressed that elevating Anna's egalitarian flag represented enduring self-respect and political integrity far more effectively than perishable billboards.
