DMK working president M.K. Stalin characterized the Union Budget presented on February 1, 2017, as a document marked by empty rhetoric and severe disappointment for Tamil Nadu. Stalin stated that despite high expectations surrounding the first combined general and railway budget, the state had been largely sidelined in resource allocations, infrastructure investments, and special relief packages needed to combat severe economic distress.
Stalin pointed out that Tamil Nadu contributed substantially to the national exchequer through direct and indirect taxes, yet consistently received inadequate returns from the Union government. Crucial state infrastructure demands, including suburban railway expansion, port development, and industrial corridor funding, received negligible financial backing. He remarked that rather than delivering meaningful economic transformation, the budget merely offered superficial cosmetic changes while systematically ignoring regional priorities.
The opposition leader stressed that the ruling AIADMK government in Tamil Nadu had failed miserably to exert necessary pressure on the Centre to secure legitimate state entitlements. Stalin called upon elected representatives and civil society to unite in demanding equitable fiscal distribution. He affirmed that the DMK would continue to champion Tamil Nadu's federal rights and advocate for fair central economic support.
