DMK working president M.K. Stalin voiced deep disappointment on February 1, 2017, following the presentation of the Union Budget by the central government. Stalin criticized the central budget for completely ignoring vital developmental and humanitarian demands repeatedly raised by Tamil Nadu. He emphasized that the budget failed to include crucial announcements regarding comprehensive agricultural loan waivers, the establishment of an AIIMS hospital in the state, and the linking of peninsular rivers.
Stalin noted that Tamil Nadu was reeling under its worst drought in over a century, which had driven vulnerable farmers to despair, penury, and tragic suicides across the Cauvery delta and beyond. Despite widespread appeals from farming communities and opposition parties, the Union government offered no financial reprieve or targeted debt relief to mitigate agrarian distress.
Stalin also pointed out that prolonged promises regarding setting up a premier AIIMS medical institution in Tamil Nadu remained unfulfilled, while inter-state river linking received no concrete budgetary commitment. The opposition leader argued that such recurrent omissions reflected the Centre's indifference toward Tamil Nadu's developmental requirements. He urged the Union government to revise its priorities and allocate necessary funds for the state.
