DMK working president M.K. Stalin issued a strong condemnation on February 5, 2017, following the sudden election of AIADMK general secretary V.K. Sasikala as leader of the legislature party. Stalin stated that an alarming political maneuver had unfolded in Chennai, orchestrated entirely against the democratic will of the people of Tamil Nadu and in direct violation of the ideals of late Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa.
Stalin asserted that the citizens of Tamil Nadu had elected the AIADMK under Jayalalithaa's direct leadership in the 2016 Assembly election. The public had never voted for nor endorsed an unelected confidante to assume the state's highest executive office. He argued that maneuvering into the Chief Minister's post without a popular mandate represented a cynical betrayal of voters who expected stable, accountable governance after Jayalalithaa's passing.
The opposition leader warned that backroom political machinations undermined democratic trust and administrative continuity. Stalin pointed out that Tamil Nadu faced pressing agrarian distress, economic difficulties, and governance challenges that required transparent, experienced leadership rather than factional power grabs. He affirmed that the DMK would firmly stand with the citizens in opposing any unconstitutional usurpation of authority.
